Business Growth Consulting Built On Your Actual Numbers
Scheduled working sessions on pricing, hiring, advertising and capacity, using the numbers already in your books rather than a plan written for somebody else.
Quick Answers
What Business Growth Consulting Is And Is Not
What is business growth consulting?
Scheduled, practical sessions on the decisions that actually move a service business. What to charge, when to hire, what to spend on advertising, and how much work the business can take without breaking. Each one is worked through against the real numbers in your books rather than against a template.
How is this different from a fractional CFO?
Equipped is not a fractional CFO company. There is no forecasting, financial modeling, fundraising support, board reporting or capital strategy here. This is an owner talking through a specific operating decision with someone who can see the numbers behind it, not an outsourced finance department.
Do I need this or do I need custom reporting?
Reporting shows what happened. Consulting is about deciding what to do next. Custom Financial Reporting builds the view, for example revenue by service or profitability by job. Business Growth Consulting is the conversation about what that view means for your pricing or your next hire. Plenty of owners want the report first and decide about the sessions later.
What does it cost?
It is included at higher service tiers or available as an add-on. There is no published price for it. What it involves depends on how often you want to meet and on what the business is trying to decide, so we quote it for you directly.
Do I have to be a bookkeeping client?
Practically, yes. The whole point is that the conversation runs on numbers we can see and trust, so it sits on top of bookkeeping rather than replacing it. Advising on pricing from numbers nobody has checked would be guessing with extra steps.
Is this coaching?
No. It is not motivational coaching and it is not therapy. It is a working session about a specific decision, with the relevant numbers open, and it ends with something you can act on rather than something you feel.

The Decisions These Sessions Cover
What the sessions work through.
Pricing
What your work actually costs to deliver, what it earns after those costs, and what that means for the number you quote.
Hiring And Capacity
Whether the business can carry another person yet, and what has to be true in the numbers before that becomes a reasonable risk.
Advertising Spend
What you are spending to win work, what it returns, and which channels are worth more of the budget than they currently get.
Sales And Conversion
Where enquiries stop turning into work, and what that gap is costing compared to the cost of filling it.
Spending Decisions
Equipment, software, subcontractors and overhead, weighed against what the business actually earns rather than against how it feels.
Reading Your Own Numbers
How to look at your reports and know what they are telling you, so the next decision does not need a session at all.

The Difference
Why This Is Not Generic Business Advice
Most advice for service businesses is written for a business nobody actually runs.
It Starts From Your Books
The numbers in the conversation are the numbers we maintain, reconciled and checked, so nobody is arguing from an impression of how the year went.
One Decision At A Time
Sessions are about something specific you are trying to decide, not a general review of the business that ends with a list of everything you could improve.
Someone Who Has Run Businesses
Matt has scaled one business to seven figures and four to six figures, and has advised hundreds of owners. The perspective is operating experience, not a framework.
No Growth Promised
Nobody can guarantee a business grows, and anyone who does is selling something else. What this offers is better information behind the decision.
In Depth
The Complete Guide To Business Growth Consulting
What these sessions cover, how consulting differs from reporting and from CFO work, and how to tell whether your numbers are ready to make decisions from.
What Business Growth Consulting Is
It is a scheduled working session about a decision. An owner brings something they are trying to work out. Usually what to charge, whether to hire, or where the advertising money should go. We work it through against the actual numbers in the business rather than against general principles.
That is a deliberately small definition. Most owners do not need a strategy document. They need to know whether the job they priced by guesswork is actually making money, and what to do if it is not.
Reporting And Consulting Are Different Things
These get sold as one thing constantly, and keeping them apart is the difference between buying what you need and buying a package. There are three separate layers.
- Basic financial reporting is part of bookkeeping. It is the natural output of categorizing, reconciling and closing, and every bookkeeping client gets it.
- Custom Financial Reporting is the deeper paid service. It builds the views standard statements cannot show, for example revenue by service, revenue by lead source, or profitability by job.
- Business Growth Consulting is the conversation about what to do with any of that. Reporting shows what happened. Consulting is about what happens next.
Plenty of owners only ever need the first. Some need the second because the standard statements cannot answer their actual question. The third is worth paying for when the numbers are already trustworthy and the problem is deciding, not seeing.
Why This Is Not Fractional CFO Work
Fractional CFO services are a different product for a different kind of company, and Equipped does not offer them. That means no forecasting, no financial modeling, no fundraising support, no board reporting and no capital strategy.
The difference is practical, not just a matter of words. A CFO engagement is built around a company answering to investors or a board. An owner-led service business usually has no board, is not raising money, and is trying to decide whether the numbers support a second van. Selling the first thing to the second business produces expensive documents nobody uses.
Pricing Decisions
Pricing is the most common reason an owner books a session. It is nearly always the same underlying problem. The price was set early, by feel or by looking at a competitor, and never revisited against what the work actually costs to deliver.
The conversation is only possible if the books separate direct costs from . If the labor, materials and subcontractors that go into delivering the work are mixed in with rent and software, there is no to look at. Any pricing discussion after that is guesswork. That is one of the reasons this service sits on top of bookkeeping rather than beside it.
Hiring And Capacity
The hiring question is rarely whether you could use the help. It is whether the business can carry the cost long enough for the hire to pay for themselves. So the session works out what has to be true in the numbers before that stops being a gamble.
- What the role costs fully loaded, not just the wage.
- What margin the work they would take on actually earns.
- How much of the current workload is genuinely transferable.
- What the business looks like in the months where revenue dips.
Advertising And Where The Money Goes
Most owner-led service businesses spend on marketing without ever seeing what it returns, because the books record it as one advertising expense and the revenue arrives as one income account. Neither side is broken down, so the two can never be compared.
Fixing that is usually a reporting job before it is a consulting one. Once revenue can be traced back to where the work came from, the conversation about budget gets short. Some of the spending works and some of it does not, and you can see which.
Are Your Numbers Ready For This
There is an honest prerequisite here. These sessions are only as good as the numbers underneath them, and a confident decision made from wrong books is worse than no decision at all.
- The books are current, and reconciled against real statements.
- Income is split in a way that reflects what you actually sell.
- Direct costs are separated from overhead, so gross margin means something.
- The balance sheet is not carrying old amounts nobody can explain.
If those are not true, the first piece of work is bookkeeping, catch-up or a clean-up, not a consulting session. We will say so rather than sell the session anyway.
How This Kind Of Engagement Goes Wrong
- It runs on numbers nobody verified, so the advice is confident and wrong.
- It becomes a standing meeting with no decision attached, which is a cost with no output.
- It is sold as CFO work to a business that has no use for CFO work.
- It promises growth, which nobody can promise, and is judged against that promise.
- It produces a document instead of a decision.
- It stays general, so the owner leaves with principles rather than an answer to the thing they asked.

A Call About The Decision
Pricing, hiring, dropping a service: the decision tells us which numbers have to be trustworthy. So we ask how you earn, what you spend to deliver the work, and how the books are kept now. That is usually enough to say whether the sessions will help yet.
Told before you buy
An Honest Answer About Fit
If the books cannot yet support the decision you are trying to make, we say so and quote the bookkeeping, catch-up or clean-up that comes first. A consulting session on unverified numbers produces confident advice and no reliable basis for it.
Scheduled, not ad hoc
The Sessions
Each session takes one decision you are actually facing, such as pricing, a hire or a spend. We work it through with the relevant numbers open. Frequency is agreed up front. It is included at higher service tiers or added on, and it is quoted directly rather than sold from a page.
One decision at a time
Something To Act On
A session ends with a specific answer and what would have to change in the numbers for that answer to change. If a decision needs a view the books do not currently produce, that becomes a reporting job and is quoted separately.
Who reviews your books
The Person Who Reviews Your Books Is The Person You Talk To

Most owners are not short of advice. They are short of a reason to believe any particular piece of it applies to them. That is what the numbers are for.

Equipped is not a CPA or tax firm and does not process payroll, so anything requiring tax advice belongs with your tax preparer. Where a decision has tax consequences, the useful thing we can do is make sure the numbers you and your preparer are looking at are correct.
